Sedation Dentistry

Home » Services » Sedation Dentistry

Many patients experience some level of anxiety when visiting the dentist. At Elite Endodontics, we understand the stresses of getting endodontic work done, so we offer sedation dentistry in the form of oral sedation..

Oral Sedation helps patients relax during a dental appointment by using various types of medication taken before coming to the appointment. It’s important to note, oral sedation does not put the patient to sleep. Instead, it makes them feel more relaxed and less anxious while receiving endodontic work. Also, it is necessary to have someone drive you to and from your appointment while taking oral sedation medication.

What Levels Of Sedation Are Available?

At Elite Endodontics, we only offer oral sedation. For oral sedation, patients receive oral medication to be taken at home about an hour before the procedure begins. Small doses of the medication create minimal sedation, which will help take the anxiety out of the root canal procedure. You will need someone to accompany you to your appointment since you will not be able to drive while on oral sedation medication.

If you feel like oral sedation is the right option for you, please ask when scheduling your initial consultation so our doctors can discuss your sedation options with you before scheduling your procedure.

Is It Safe?

Sedation dentistry is a safe practice when performed by an experienced dental professional. During your initial consultation appointment, our doctors will review your medical history with you and answer any questions you have about the procedure and oral sedation.

Our doctors are highly experienced and qualified to perform oral sedation dentistry. For every procedure, they follow the strict guidelines of the Florida Board of Dentistry.

Why Is Sedation Dentistry Needed?

Oral Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients who experience severe anxiety when visiting the dentist or endodontist. Some patients struggle to schedule necessary dental appointments because of the extreme stress. Oral Sedation helps eliminate anxiety so patients can receive the dental treatments they need.

Ideal candidates for oral sedation dentistry include the following:

  • Patients who have a low pain tolerance
  • Patients who have sensitive teeth
  • Patients who need extensive endodontic work
  • Patients who have high levels of anxiety during treatment

Does Every Root Canal Need Sedation Dentistry?

No, not every root canal requires oral sedation. However, patients undergoing a root canal have the option to use oral sedation if they request it. A root canal is a relatively quick and painless procedure. But if undergoing dental treatment causes anxiety, it is best to discuss your sedation options with the endodontist during your consultation.

Find relief Today

During your visit, our Pensacola endodontists, Dr. Todd and Dr. Beam, will answer any and all questions about your oral health. We will provide a detailed financial consultation to ensure your treatments are timed effectively and affordably.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

One of the main benefits of sedation dentistry is that it helps patients feel more relaxed and less anxious during their dental procedures. This can be especially helpful for individuals who have a fear of the dentist or who experience high levels of anxiety during dental treatments. Sedation dentistry can also help patients who have a low pain tolerance or who require extensive dental work, as it can help them remain comfortable throughout the procedure.

Additionally, sedation dentistry can make it easier for the dentist to perform the necessary treatments, as the patient is more cooperative and less likely to move or fidget during the procedure. This can help ensure that the treatment is completed quickly and effectively, leading to better outcomes for the patient. Overall, the benefits of sedation dentistry can make dental visits more comfortable and less stressful for patients.

Types of Sedation Available

There are several different levels of sedation available for dental procedures, ranging from mild sedation to general anesthesia. Mild forms of sedation, such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or oral sedatives, can help patients relax and reduce anxiety during the procedure. These forms of sedation allow patients to remain conscious and responsive, but may cause drowsiness or a feeling of relaxation.

For patients who require a deeper level of sedation, options such as IV sedation or general anesthesia may be recommended. These forms of sedation can cause the patient to become unconscious or semi-conscious during the procedure, making it easier for the dentist to perform complex treatments or surgeries. The type of sedation used will depend on the patient's medical history, the complexity of the treatment, and their level of anxiety or pain tolerance. Discussing the available options with your dentist can help determine the best form of sedation for your individual needs.
